How to Clone a Cannabis Plant with Soil Only
I love cannabis. There, I said it. I love the way it smells, tastes, and makes me feel. I love growing it, smoking it, and keeping it to myself. But cannabis is not easy to come by in my country. It's illegal, expensive, and risky. That's why I always dreamed of finding a stray cannabis plant and taking care of it as my own.
One evening, my wife and I were taking our usual walk around the neighborhood. We liked to explore different streets and alleys, looking for interesting sights and sounds. As we passed by a trash pile, something caught my eye. It was a green plant with serrated leaves and tiny white hairs. It was hidden among the garbage, but I recognized it immediately. It was a cannabis plant.
I stopped and stared at it in disbelief. How did it get there? Who planted it? Did anyone else know about it? I looked around nervously, but no one seemed to notice us. I nudged my wife and pointed at the plant. She gasped and frowned.
"Is that what I think it is?" she whispered.
"Yes, it is," I whispered back.
"What are you going to do?"
I thought for a moment. I wanted to take the plant home with me, but that would be too risky. Someone might see me carrying it, or worse, someone might come looking for it. But I couldn't just leave it there either. It was too precious to waste.
Then an idea hit me. Why don't I get clones instead? Clones are cuttings from a cannabis plant that can grow into new plants. They have the same genetics as the mother plant, so they will produce the same buds. And they are much easier to hide and transport than a whole plant.
I decided to act on my idea. I told my wife to go home without me and that I would be back soon. She agreed reluctantly and kissed me goodbye. She didn't like my cannabis hobby, but she tolerated it as long as I didn't involve her or harm anyone else.
So I ran back to our house and looked up "HOW TO CLONE CANNABIS PLANT WITH SOIL" on google.com, I found a site called "Igbolabi" where they gave a very simple how-to guide for my query.
Do you want to grow your own cannabis plants from cuttings? Cloning is a simple and effective way to propagate cannabis and preserve the genetics of your favorite strains.
Here are the steps to follow if you only have soil as your rooting medium:
1. Gather your supplies. You will need:
- A healthy cannabis plant (the mother plant) that is in the vegetative stage and has multiple branches.
-A clean and sharp tool (such as a knife or scissors) to cut the branches.
- Some soil that is moist but not soggy. You can use potting soil, garden soil, or compost. Make sure it is free of pests and diseases.
- A spray bottle with water to mist the cuttings.
- A plastic bag or dome to cover the cuttings and create humidity.
- A light source (such as a lamp or a window) to provide indirect light for the cuttings.
2. Take your cuttings. Choose a branch that is straight, healthy, and has at least three nodes on it. A node is where a leaf or bud grows from the stem. Cut the branch at a 45-degree angle just below the third node. Remove any leaves near the bottom node and dip the cut end in water.
3. Insert the cutting into your soil. Make a hole in the soil with your finger and insert the cutting into it. Make sure the bottom node is covered by the soil. Gently press the soil around the stem to secure it.
4. Keep the cutting moist and humid. Spray the cutting with water every day to keep it hydrated. Cover the cutting with a plastic bag or dome to create humidity and prevent water loss.
5. Provide indirect light and warmth for the cutting. Place the cutting in a spot where it receives indirect light for 18 hours a day. Avoid direct sunlight or strong artificial lights, as they can dry out or burn the cutting. Keep the temperature around 70°F or 21°C for optimal root development.
6. Check for roots after two or three weeks. Gently tug on the cutting to see if it resists. If it does, that means roots have formed. If not, wait another week and try again.
7. Transplant the rooted cutting into a bigger pot or the ground. Prepare the pot or the ground with more soil and nutrients and make a hole for the cutting. Carefully remove the cutting from its soil and place it in the hole. Cover the roots with soil and water well.
8. Care for your clone as you would for any cannabis plant. Give it enough light, water, nutrients, air circulation, and pest control. Prune it, train it, and harvest it when it's ready.
After that I closed my laptop and grabbed some supplies: a pair of scissors, a white custard container with cover and water. Then I headed back to the trash pile.
It was still dark and rainy when I got there. The cannabis plant was still there, untouched by anyone. It had just begun flowering and I could see the buds forming on its branches. I felt a pang of sadness as I approached it. It was such a beautiful plant and I hated to hurt it. But I told myself that it was for a good cause.
I chose a branch that looked healthy and had at least three nodes on it. A node is where a leaf or bud grows from the stem. I cut the branch at a 45-degree angle just below the third node. I removed any leaves near the bottom node and dipped the cut end in water and then in rooting hormone. This would help the cutting grow roots faster and prevent infection.
I inserted the cutting into the container. Then I sprayed the cutting with water to keep it hydrated. I repeated this process until I had four cuttings from the cannabis plant. I felt guilty for taking so much from it, but I also felt excited for having four potential clones of my own. I thanked the plant for its generosity and hoped that it would survive, I then ran back home as fast as I could.
When I got home, my wife was waiting for me anxiously. She hugged me and asked me if everything went well.
"Yes, everything went well," I said, showing her the bag of pots.
"Wow, you did it!" she exclaimed.
"Yes, I did," I said proudly.
"Where are you going to put them?"
"I have an idea," I said.
I took her to our spare bedroom, where we had an old closet that we never used. Inside the closet, there was a shelf with some books and magazines on it.
I cleared the shelf and placed the plants in pots along with humidity chambers then placed the pots on it. After that, I plugged in an old lamp that we had lying around and positioned it above the pots.
"This will be our cloning chamber," I said.
"What does it do?" she asked.
"It provides light and warmth for the cuttings,"
"How long will they take to root?"
"About two or three weeks,"
"And then what?"
"Then we transplant them into bigger pots with more soil and nutrients,"
"And then what?"
"Then we grow them until they are ready to harvest,"
"And then what?"
"Then we smoke them!"
She rolled her eyes and shook her head.
"You're crazy," she said.
"But you love me anyway," I said.
She smiled and kissed me.
"I do, but don't expect me to join you," she said.
"I won't, don't worry," I said.
We were both happy and hopeful.
We had just started our cannabis adventure.
